Eagles played to a thrilling 35-35 draw vs. Argentina last week in
Houston. They ran in four tries and scored more than 35 points against a
team other than Canada for the first time since 2012. Against
Argentina, the Americans called in a number of their overseas
professionals: Cam Dolan, Taku Ngwenya, Greg Peterson and Blaine Scully
have all returned to their professional clubs, but Eric Fry and the
recalled Todd Clever remain in the mix. For this weekend, Clever has
been named the captain – a role former coach Mike Tolkin stripped him of
– but is one of just five capped players in the squad. Fry is the
vice-captain. Gilmour was one of two overseas pros in the lineup for
Canada, Phil Mackenzie remains on right wing. Though six of the Canadian
starters won their first test caps (plus Clark’s debut off the bench),
the team had strong performances across the board. The defence was
strong, with some big hits, and the team was quick to counter-attack
whenever possible.
Partnering debutants Nate Brakeley and David Tameilau in the back row,
Clever will lead the Eagles with just four other capped internationals
in the starting XV. Last Saturday's opening match of the fledgling
competition featuring six of North and South America's best national
teams – a 35-35 draw with Argentina XV in Houston – was not a rankings
test, meaning no caps were awarded to the nine eligible players. Prop
Eric Fry and inside center Lemoto Filikitonga will serve as vice
captains against Canada, with the match scheduled to be streamed live on
ESPN 3 (WatchESPN.com) at 6 p.m. CT and re-aired on ESPN 2 Sunday at
7:30 p.m. CT. "We want to grow the leadership group," Mitchell said of
his captaincy selections. "It's not just about one person – he needs to
be supported by others. We have some diversity in our group, as well.
Shared leadership, a sort of co-captaincy, is something that suits
certain groups these days and we have the right people to help the
younger players through something that's new for them."
